Andasibe National Park (Analamazaotra)

The Analamazaotra Reserve is renowned for its population of Indri indri, the largest and loudest of the lemurs. The Indri stands about a meter tall, with a face reminiscent of a teddy bear and coloration similar to that of a panda. Its long hind legs are very powerful, allowing it to jump more than 10 meters and perform mid-air turns with remarkable agility. Its song distinguishes this animal from other lemurs: while most grunt or scream, the Indri “sings” (sometimes compared to the sound of a siren). Generally, in the reserve, you will have the opportunity to hear them singing in chorus between one and two hours after sunrise or just after sunset.

Indris are monogamous and live in small family groups of about five individuals. In Malagasy, the Indri is called “Babakoto”, which means “father of Koto”; according to legend, a boy named Koto, stung by bees while looking for wild honey, fell from a tree and was saved mid-air by an Indri.

Nine species of lemurs can be observed in Analamazaotra. Besides the Indri indri, you may also spot the brown lemur and the eastern lesser bamboo lemur, as well as three nocturnal species: the eastern woolly lemur, the rufous mouse lemur and the greater dwarf lemur.
