Ifaty – beaches, lagoon and spiny forest on the south‑west coast of Madagascar
Ifaty village, located about 40 km north of Toliara, has become the liveliest seaside destination in southern Madagascar. Together with neighbouring Mangily village, the area stretches along a dry coastline dotted with fishing villages, beach hotels, restaurants and small bars where many travellers end up staying longer than planned. The atmosphere is very different from more isolated spots like Anakao or Ambatomilo. Less remote. More going on. More nightlife.
The beaches are pleasant rather than spectacular. The lagoon is shallow and protected by the offshore coral reef, but the coastline around Ifaty is not as impressive as some more distant south‑west beaches. What makes the area popular is above all the combination of easy access, a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of activities.
The range of accommodation is wide, from very simple bungalows to more comfortable hotels with pools and restaurants overlooking the lagoon. Backpackers, families, divers and local travellers mingle, especially at weekends and during holidays. Some evenings, the seafront restaurants get quite lively, with music, grilled fish and groups drinking local rum while fishermen return with their pirogues.
The best‑known excursions are probably the Reniala Reserve and the Honko Mangrove Reserve. Reniala protects a portion of the south‑west spiny forest with baobabs, endemic plants and birds adapted to the arid climate. Honko offers a completely different environment with mangroves, wooden boardwalks and Vezo villages between the sea and the lagoon.
The coral reef also draws visitors for snorkelling, scuba diving and fishing trips. Conditions change a lot depending on wind and tides. Some days the lagoon seems perfectly calm. Others much less so.
Ifaty is perfect for those looking for a few days by the sea with activities and a local feel without total isolation.
