The Experience
Departure is very early in the morning from Antananarivo. Depending on traffic and road conditions leaving the city, it generally takes about four hours to drive towards Andasibe. Arrive and visit the well-known Analamazaotra Reserve – a part of the Andasibe-Mantadia protected area.
The forest here is vastly different from the highlands around the capital: dense thicket, colossal trees, tree ferns, and the perennial moisture that characterizes all of Madagascar’s eastern rainforest. By Madagascar trekking standards, Analamazaotra remains largely accessible – the excursion is appropriate for most travellers and families.
Encounter the Voice of the Canopy
Top billing goes to the Indri Indri (babakoto in Malagasy). Its raspy, haunting calls echo through the forest long before you actually see the animal. Depending on the day and season, you may also spot other lemur species, chameleons, frogs, orchids, and many endemic birds.
We’ll have free time for lunch at a local restaurant right after the visit, then head back to Antananarivo, with short breaks along the RN2 at local artwork markets or scenic vistas.
