Mantasoa and Peyrieras day trip from Antananarivo combining reptiles, lemurs, lake crossings and conservation experiences in one day.
🦎 The Mantasoa and Peyrieras day trip from Antananarivo combines reptiles, lemurs, lake views and conservation projects into one surprisingly diverse day east of the capital.
You get an early start in the morning, heading down the RN2 towards Marozevo where the world-renowned Peyrieras Reptiles Park provides one of the easiest ways to view some of Madagascar’s more strange and wonderful reptiles up close. The mood shifts dramatically later in the day as the road ascends to chilly pine forests and lakes near Mantasoa.
A short hop across the water in an outboard takes you to Nosy Soa, a small private island reserve home to free-ranging lemurs in its trees. You have lunch here. The feeling is peaceful, green and worlds apart from the hectic capital just a few hours earlier.
This excursion is especially genius for travelers seeking wildlife and nature at a gentler pace, without sleeping outside of Antananarivo.
The Experience
Leave early in the morning from Antananarivo, climbing up RN2 heading east among the highlands. The road goes through acres of rice fields, roadside villages, eucalyptus forests and the slow morning bustle of rural Madagascar.
Peyrieras Reptiles Park – Arrival at Marozevo for the guided tour of the famous Peyrieras Reptiles Park after about 2 hours.
The park is famous for the endemic reptiles and amphibians that inhabit it. Some of the stars include giant chameleons such as Parson’s Chameleon or Oustalet’s Chameleon, along with leaf-tailed geckos, frogs, butterflies and many other animals unique to Madagascar.
The visit is leisurely and educational rather than frantic. It serves as a sanctuary for certain animals – showing how these creatures survive, disguise themselves and adapt to Madagascar’s changing environments.
Following the reptile park, proceed to Lake Mantasoa – a pristine and tranquil lake region east of Antananarivo. Unlike other parts of the highlands, this area is characterized by pine trees, aged colonial structures and lakeside surroundings.
Enjoy free time for lunch at a lakeside lodge or local restaurant before embarking on a small boat for the crossing to Nosy Soa.
The boat ride itself is already part of the experience: on still afternoons, the lake mirrors its surrounding hills and pine forests.
Upon arrival on Nosy Soa, you will enjoy a guided visit of the small island reserve and its conservation projects. Several species of lemur roam freely in the reserve, sometimes coming quite close to visitors.
Trails traverse forested areas designed to protect biodiversity, restore habitat and educate visitors about local ecosystems. Ring-tailed lemurs are typically the most accessible, but other species can also be seen depending on timing and conditions.
Boat back to the mainland, then drive to Antananarivo in the late afternoon.
