You could even argue Madagascar’s eastern corridor is the planet’s most interesting region—unconventional 12-day search this way are also rich relentless rainforests, historic waterways and beautiful palm-lined coasts. This more wildlife-centric itinerary, beginning in Antananarivo, includes Andasibe-Mantadia National Park (home to the critically endangered and somewhat odd-sounding Indri Indri lemurs) as well as community-run conservation initiatives—such as at Mitsinjo Reserve.

After a scenic trip down the Pangalanes Canal, you travel onwards to Palmarium where you will have unparalleled up-close interactions with lemurs and an altogether singular opportunity to spot an aye-aye on nearby Aye-Aye Island. Next, travelers head to Madagascar’s port of Toamasina—plus a tranquil evening at Plum Island before three days devoted entirely to chilling out on the green-flanked shores with their dazzling sands and coral gardens—and watching for photo-op-happy humpback whales. Ideal for animal lovers and adventurous travelers after real experiences, the combination of wildlife highlights, cultural encounters, and relaxing beach time makes this one of our most complete Madagascar itineraries.

📅 Full Itinerary — Day by Day

Day 1 – Antananarivo

Arrival and transfer at Ivato International Airport. On arrival, after immigration and customs formalities transfer to your hotel in the capital city of the highlands: Antananarivo. Stay overnight at Havana Resort or similar hotel.

Day 2 – Antananarivo → Andasibe | 140 km – approx. 4 hours

Leave east to Andasibe — the entrance gate of Madagascar's most accessible rainforest corridor. On the way, visit the well-known Peyrieras Private Reserve, a haven for chameleons, butterflies, leaf-tailed geckos and exotic frogs in over 3.5 hectares of naturalistic habitats. Lunch and then continue to visit the Mitsinjo Reserve, a community-run conservation success story where locals have restored degraded land by planting 2 million endemic trees. Join a night walk near Andasibe-Mantadia National Park (after dark!) to find elusive woolly lemurs, sleeping chameleons and rare nocturnal insects. Stay overnight at Feony Ala Hotel or similar.

Day 3 – Andasibe

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park: a rainforest paradise that shelters 14 lemur species, 51 reptiles and 84 amphibians. Guided trails uncover the renowned Indri Indri — the world's largest lemur whose eerie chanting reverberates through the forest canopy — along with elegant leaping sifakas and black-and-white ruffed lemurs. Look out for vividly coloured chameleons hiding among ferns and orchids. In the afternoon head to the private Vakona Reserve, famous for its habituated black-and-white ruffed lemurs that roam around "Lemur Island" and will love to perch on your shoulder. Overnight at Feony Ala Hotel or similar.

Day 4 – Andasibe → Palmarium | ~3 hours + boat

Transfer to Brickaville, and then take picturesque routes to Manambato on the historic Pangalanes Canal — a 400-mile-long assemblage of waterways that connect Madagascar's east coast. Motorized boat transfer across Lake Ampitabe to Palmarium, a lodge set in a special forest peninsula on the water. Settle into your cottage and relax. After sunset, take a night walk with a guide to see nocturnal wildlife such as mouse lemurs and camouflaged reptiles. Overnight at Palmarium Hotel or similar.

Day 5 – Palmarium

Palmarium Reserve: you can see as many as nine species of lemur at extremely close quarters — on occasion, a black-and-white ruffed lemur may even venture within arm's reach. Then take a walk along the lakeside to Andranokoditra, a fishermen's village alive with friendly villagers and fishermen returning from their daily catch. Enjoy a relaxed beachside lunch. In the evening, head out on the water to nearby Aye-Aye Island (Île aux Aye-Aye), a protected islet where you can see the rare and mysterious aye-aye — the world's largest nocturnal lemur — living in its natural habitat. Overnight at Palmarium Hotel or similar.

Day 6 – Palmarium → Manambato → Toamasina | boat + 2 hrs drive

Return via boat transfer to Manambato then drive on a paved road to Toamasina (Tamatave), the busy eastern port city of Madagascar. Afternoon guided city tour: palm-fringed boulevards, the bustling waterfront, colourful local markets and colonial districts. Enjoy the local fresh fish and coastal ambiance. Overnight at Hotel Marina Beach or equivalent.

Day 7 – Toamasina

Boat tour to Plum Island (Île aux Prunes), a quiet escape. Stroll to the old lighthouse for sweeping vistas of the ocean, see thousands of fruit bats hang out in the mangroves and picnic on the shore. You can go snorkelling in crystal-clear waters brimming with tropical fish or just relax on the beach. Be on the lookout for migrating humpback whales offshore between July and September. Overnight at Hotel Marina Beach or similar.

Days 8–10 – Toamasina → Mahambo → Sainte-Marie

Distance: 50 km (3 hours). Travel early to Mahambo and take a picturesque ferry ride across the waters of Madagascar's northeast coast to Sainte-Marie (Île Sainte-Marie), our tropical island paradise. Spend 3 nights on this relaxed island, famous for its gorgeous beaches, clear waters and pirate tales. Optional: island tour (by tuk-tuk); whale watching (seasonal); diving; coral reef snorkelling; beaches on the north-east coast. Overnight: Maningory Hotel, Ile aux Nattes or similar.

Day 11 – Sainte-Marie → Antananarivo

Domestic flight transfer to Sainte-Marie Airport for your flight to Antananarivo. Arrival: transfer from the airport to your hotel near the airport. Spend your last evening in the capital at leisure: perhaps some final souvenir shopping, or simply time to reflect on your Madagascar journey. Overnight at Chat'o Park Hotel or similar.

Day 12 – Antananarivo → International Departure

Morning transfer to Ivato International Airport for international departure flight. End of our services.
