📅 Full Itinerary — Day by Day

Day 1 – Antananarivo

Touch down at Ivato International Airport, where your guide will greet you and escort you to your hotel near the city. Antananarivo, the sprawling capital, is a city of contrasts—colonial mansions stand beside bustling markets, and hillside stairways offer sweeping views over rice‑paddied plains. Take the evening to relax, acclimatise, and perhaps take a short stroll to soak in the first flavours of Malagasy life. Overnight at Hotel Belvedere or similar.

Day 2 – Antananarivo → Andasibe | 4 hours drive

Leave the capital early and head east on the winding road towards Andasibe‑Mantadia National Park. As you climb through the lush eastern escarpment, the air grows cooler and the vegetation denser. Arrive in the early afternoon and waste no time—begin your first birding foray along the forest edges, where you might spot Madagascar Owl roosting, White‑headed Vanga flitting through the canopy, or Madagascar Rail skulking in the marsh. Keep an eye out for Mascarene Martin and the endemic Madagascar Wagtail. Settle in for two nights at Sahatandra River Hotel, lulled by the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 3 – Andasibe

A full day devoted to two of Madagascar's finest reserves. In the morning, explore the Analamazoatra Special Reserve (Perinet), famous for its habituated Indri—their haunting calls echo through the trees. Then move into Mantadia National Park, where primary rainforest hosts a wealth of birdlife. Targets include Madagascar Sparrowhawk, Madagascar Baza, Madagascar Flufftail, Greater Vasa Parrot, Red‑fronted Coua, and a host of vangas—Nuthatch Vanga, Ward's Flycatcher, and more. Listen for the subtle calls of Dusky Newtonia and Common Jery, and scan the canopy for Madagascar White‑eye and Malagasy Green Sunbird. With luck, you may even spot the well‑camouflaged Collared Nightjar at dusk. Overnight at Sahatandra River Hotel.

Day 4 – Andasibe → Antsirabe | 8 hours drive

A long but spectacular drive west across the highlands. The road climbs through terraced rice paddies, eucalyptus groves, and traditional brick‑and‑mud villages, with rounded granite hills forming a dramatic backdrop. Arrive in Antsirabe, the "Vichy of Madagascar"—a colonial‑era spa town renowned for its cool climate and vibrant artisan scene. Take a pousse‑pousse (rickshaw) ride through the centre, visit workshops where zebu‑horn carvings and embroidered textiles are created, and browse the gemstone market. Overnight at H1 Antsirabe.

Day 5 – Antsirabe → Ranomafana | 5 hours drive

Before leaving Antsirabe, stop at the volcanic lakes Andraikiba and Tritriva—the latter a dramatic crater lake surrounded by legends. Then continue south on the RN7, winding through hills and valleys until you reach Ranomafana National Park, a World Heritage site of dense rainforest and cloud forest. This park protects 12 lemur species, including the rare Golden Bamboo Lemur and Milne‑Edwards' Sifaka, and is a birding hotspot. Settle in for three nights at Centrest Sejour.

Days 6‑7 – Ranomafana

Two full days to immerse yourself in Ranomafana's extraordinary biodiversity. Explore different elevations and habitats—from the humid lowland trails to the moss‑draped cloud forest ridges. Key avian targets include the spectacular Pitta‑like Ground Roller, White‑throated Oxylabes, Hook‑billed Vanga, Tylas Vanga, and the rare Brown Mesite. Overhead, watch for Madagascar Crested Ibis and Madagascar Goshawk. A special excursion to Vohiparara—a nearby marsh and forest fragment—can yield the elusive Yellow‑bellied Sunbird‑Asity, Velvet Asity, Rufous‑headed Ground Roller, Cryptic Warbler, and Pollen's Vanga. Patient birders might even glimpse the critically endangered Madagascar Pochard on the lakes. Evenings are spent recounting the day's sightings over a good meal. Overnight at Centrest Sejour.

Day 8 – Ranomafana → Ranohira | 6 hours drive

Head south again, making a vital stop at Anja Reserve, a community‑managed forest perched on a rocky outcrop. Here, troops of Ring‑tailed Lemurs sunbathe on the granite boulders—a photographer's dream. Continue to the gateway of Isalo National Park, the town of Ranohira. The landscape transforms dramatically into open savannah and jagged sandstone massifs. Overnight at H1 Isalo.

Day 9 – Ranohira (Isalo National Park)

An early morning birding walk around the park's edges can produce White‑throated Rail, Benson's Rock Thrush, and Madagascar Starling. Then spend the day exploring Isalo's extraordinary terrain—deep canyons, natural swimming pools, and the famous "Window of Isalo", a rock formation that frames the sunset. While not as bird‑rich as the rainforests, Isalo offers unique species adapted to its arid environment and stunning vistas. Overnight at H1 Isalo.

Day 10 – Ranohira → Ifaty (via Zombitse) | 5 hours drive

En route to the coast, stop at Zombitse National Park, a dry forest fragment that is a birding gem. Here you can search for the endemic Appert's Greenbul, the impressive Giant Coua, Coquerel's Coua, and a suite of vangas—Red‑tailed, Rufous, and Blue Vanga, as well as Cuckoo‑Roller. Continue to the coast and arrive at Ifaty, a fishing village on the Mozambique Channel, where the spiny forest meets the turquoise sea. Overnight at Bamboo Club.

Day 11 – Ifaty

Start the day at leisure—perhaps enjoy a swim or a walk along the beach. For those keen to add waterbirds to their list, we offer an optional 2‑hour mangrove excursion: board a traditional pirogue and glide through the tidal channels with a local guide. This peaceful habitat hosts Humblot's Heron, Madagascar Heron, Striated Heron, Dimorphic Egret, and, seasonally, Crab Plover, Terek Sandpiper, Whimbrel, and Grey Plover. The calm waters and lush mangroves are also excellent for photography. Afternoon free to relax or bird the coastal scrub. Overnight at Bamboo Club.

Day 12 – Ifaty → Toliara → Antananarivo | 1 hour flight

Transfer north to Toliara (Tulear) for the domestic flight back to the capital. On arrival, you'll be met and driven to your hotel in Antananarivo. Use the afternoon to rest, shop for souvenirs, or explore the city's lively markets. Overnight at San Cristobal or similar.

Day 13 – Antananarivo → Ankarafantsika | 9 hours drive

An early start for the long drive north‑west to Ankarafantsika National Park. This is Madagascar's largest remaining dry deciduous forest, a completely different ecosystem from what you've seen so far. The road passes through rice plains and scrubby woodlands; the journey is long but rewarding. Arrive in the late afternoon and check in to Gite Ampijoroa, your base for two nights, surrounded by the sounds of the forest.

Day 14 – Ankarafantsika

A full day to explore the dry forests around Ampijoroa. This park is a haven for specialists: listen for the haunting calls of White‑breasted Mesite, search for the elusive Schlegel's Asity and the striking Van Dam's Vanga. Red‑capped Coua and Coquerel's Coua are common, and you may also spot Madagascar Crested Ibis, Madagascar Buttonquail, and several raptors like Frances's Sparrowhawk. The park is also rich in lemurs—look for Coquerel's Sifaka, Common Brown Lemur, and, with luck, the nocturnal Fat‑tailed Dwarf Lemur. Overnight at Gite Ampijoroa.

Day 15 – Ankarafantsika → Antananarivo

After a final morning bird walk, begin the return drive to Antananarivo (approx. 8 hours). The journey offers one last chance to appreciate the changing landscapes. Arrive in the capital in the evening, where your tour concludes with a transfer to the airport or to your own accommodation. End of services.
