Avenue of the Baobabs – the most iconic landscape of western Madagascar
The Avenue of the Baobabs is probably the most iconic landscape in Madagascar. Located just outside Morondava, this famous stretch of dirt track lined with giant baobabs has become one of the country’s signature images, especially at sunrise and sunset when the light completely transforms the atmosphere.
Some of these trees are several hundred years old. Their giant trunks rise above the plain in almost unreal shapes, especially when the sky turns orange and red towards the end of the day. Even after seeing a thousand photographs, the place still strikes you in person.
What makes the avenue special is that it is still part of local daily life. Zebu-drawn carts slowly cross the track, children return home from nearby villages, and bicycles pass under the trees as they have for generations. It doesn’t feel like a place built for tourism: the baobabs are simply part of the landscape.
The magic moment of sunset
Sunset is the most famous time to visit. The light changes rapidly and the trunks shift from grey to gold, then to deep red before becoming dark silhouettes against the sky. Many travelers end up staying longer than planned simply watching the colors change minute by minute.
Sunrise: a quieter atmosphere
Sunrise offers a quieter atmosphere instead. The air is fresh, there are fewer people, and the soft morning light gives the landscape a completely different character. For photographers or travelers seeking calm, it is often the best time.
How to get there and best season
The Avenue of the Baobabs is located about 20 km northeast of Morondava, about 30 minutes by car. If traveling by tuk-tuk, allow about 1 hour to get there.
Coordinates: -20.25, 44.42
The avenue can be visited all year round. After November, the baobabs begin to grow leaves and the landscape becomes greener and softer. During the dry season, roughly from April to October, the atmosphere appears more dramatic, with red dust, arid plains and very marked silhouettes under clear skies.
Useful tips
- Arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset.
- Bring water and protect cameras or phones from dust.
- Stay after sunset: the best colors often come a few minutes later.
- If possible, combine the visit with Kirindy Forest or a stay in Morondava.
Conclusion
Beyond the photographs, what really remains is the atmosphere: the red dust suspended in the air, the silence among the trees and the immense silhouettes of the baobabs dominating the horizon.
