One of the most dramatic and astonishingly biodiverse protected areas in northeast Madagascar is Marojejy National Park. With a striking granite massif rising from tropical lowland rainforest through to the craggy rock peaks of high montane, this park holds a reputation for wild, clean ecosystems and outstanding biodiversity.
Far from the beaten path — both literally and figuratively — Marojejy is one of the most rugged parks in Madagascar, located near Sambava for those keen on a challenging multi-day trek through its wilderness. It belongs to the Rainforests of the Atsinanana UNESCO World Heritage region, which makes it internationally vital for conservation.
Additionally, it is one of the best places in Madagascar to spot the famous Silky Sifaka (often referred to as the world’s most beautiful lemur). It is one of the rare locations where you can still see this critically endangered animal in its natural habitat.
Marojejy is a genuine trekking destination as opposed to many of Madagascar’s more leisurely parks. Prepare for sharp climbs, river crossings, mountain campouts, and panoramic views that get increasingly breathtaking at higher altitudes.
Geography & Altitude Ecosystems
The park covers approximately 555 km² and is entirely focused around an imposing mountain with jagged ridgelines and deep valleys. Because of the steep altitudinal gradient scaling from 75 meters to more than 2,130 meters at the absolute summit, you walk through completely changing ecosystems over short distances. You will trace tall canopy trees in dense lowland rainforests, transition into mid-elevation montane forests dripping with epiphytes and mosses, and finish in stunted, otherworldly plant life up in the high-altitude cloud forests.
The 4‑Day Trekking Circuit
🥾 Day 1: Sambava to Camp Mantella: Leave Sambava in the morning and drive to Manantenina, the gateway to Marojejy National Park. The trek starts through lowland rainforest after you meet your local guide and porters. The route takes you along rivers and winding forest paths lined with wildlife. This first section is fairly progressive, providing great opportunities for spotting chameleons, frogs, endemic birds, and your first lemurs. Arrive at Camp Mantella (~450m) by afternoon for dinner and a nocturnal spotlighting walk.
🐒 Day 2: Camp Mantella to Camp Marojejia: After breakfast, you will head deeper and higher into the national park. As we scramble up the valley, the terrain becomes steeper and the trees give way to majestic granite slopes. The landscape here is dominated by giant tree ferns, moss-covered primary trees, and thick mountain vegetation. This specific mid-elevation sector (~1,200m) is where you have the highest chance of encountering the iconic Silky Sifaka feeding in the canopy.
🧗 Day 3: Long Peak Day & High Mountain Trails: An early departure for the most demanding and beautiful day of the trek. This tough climb leads up through the higher peaks of the massif, opening up sheer views of the surrounding rainforest valleys. Depending on local weather conditions and your fitness level, hikers can push toward the high ridges and cloud forests near Camp Simpona (~1,800m) or the rugged summit before tracing back down to the comfort of Camp Marojejia for the night.
🌿 Day 4: Return Descent to Sambava: Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest for your steady descent back down the mountain massif. On the way back to the park boundary, enjoy a final chance to spot unique reptiles and birds. Arrive in Manantenina by midday for your private 4×4 transfer back to Sambava, arriving by middle to late afternoon.
Why Choose This Experience
When it comes to true wilderness in Madagascar, Marojejy is hard to beat. It is arguably the country’s ultimate rainforest trek for hikers and wildlife lovers alike. The combination of untouched primary forest, dramatic granite mountainscapes, legendary local taboos (fady) that preserve the valleys, and the chance to walk alongside the rare Silky Sifaka makes for a raw adventure far removed from ordinary tourist routes.
