Day 1 – Antananarivo
Meet and assist according to your international flight schedule at Ivato International Airport. Transfer to Antananarivo, the highland capital of Madagascar. Afternoon free to relax and acclimatise. Overnight at Havana Resort Hotel or similar.
Day 2 – Antananarivo → Ampefy | 120 km, ~3 hours
Depart west via the RN1. Pass through traditional villages of the Central Highlands, terraced rice fields and brick houses. Explore old volcanic cones around the peaceful lake region of Itasy. Arrive at Ampefy. Free afternoon to walk along the lake, visit a local crafts workshop or rest. Overnight at Kintana Fleuron Hotel or similar.
Day 3 – Ampefy → Tsiroanomandidy | 130 km, ~3 hours
Morning visit to the Analavory geysers, where mineral‑rich groundwater erupts through limestone fissures. Continue west to Tsiroanomandidy, the last major town before the far west. This bustling market centre gives a taste of rural Madagascar and the famous zebu markets. Overnight at Relais du Bongolava Hotel or similar.
Day 4 – Tsiroanomandidy → Tsiafapapango | 120 km, ~7 h
Travel into the Bongolava massif, a semi‑arid region known for its weekly zebu markets and traditional Sakalava culture. The landscape changes to dry slopes, savannah dotted with ancient baobabs, and distant villages. Continue to Tsiafapapango and camp near a viewpoint over the Ambatomalamba falls. Evening under the stars in full wilderness. Overnight: bivouac.
Day 5 – Tsiafapapango → Ankavandra | 4–5 hours trekking
Early start for a long walk through the dry hills of Bongolava. Vistas, encounters with shepherds, and glimpses of endemic birds and reptiles. Picnic lunch en route. Afternoon arrival in Ankavandra for a genuine taste of local life. Overnight at a local guesthouse (Chez Nouredine).
Day 6 – Ankavandra → Manambolo River Descent
Board traditional dugout canoes for the first descent of the Manambolo River. The route takes you into deep limestone gorges on the way to Bekopaka. Before departure, local guides perform a traditional ceremony asking ancestors for blessing and safe passage. Overnight: riverside bivouac.
Days 7 & 8 – Manambolo River Descent
Two days on the river between dry hills, gallery forests and limestone canyons. For many remote villages the river is the only access, offering a glimpse into life along untouched riverside settlements. Possible wildlife sightings include Verreaux's sifakas, Madagascar fish eagles, kingfishers, and scenes of daily life along the banks. Overnight: riverside bivouac.
Day 9 – Manambolo River → Bekopaka
Pass through the Manambolo gorges, with ancient Vazimba tombs carved into the cliffs, as you approach the Bemaraha massif. Limestone walls rise on both sides while paddling back toward civilization. Early afternoon arrival in Bekopaka. Rest and prepare for the Tsingy exploration. Overnight at Olympe de Bemaraha Hotel or similar.
Day 10 – Bekopaka → Grand Tsingy → Bekopaka | 40 km, ~3 hours
Full‑day guided tour of the Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cross suspension bridges over razor‑sharp limestone pinnacles, explore caves and canyons, and see endemic flora and fauna. Overnight at Olympe de Bemaraha Hotel or similar.
Day 11 – Bekopaka → Morondava | 220 km, ~10 hours
Head south, crossing the Manambolo and Tsiribihina rivers by local ferry. Lunch in the riverside town of Belo‑sur‑Tsiribihina. Continue to Morondava and stop at the Avenue of the Baobabs, arriving in time to see ancient Grandidier's baobabs silhouetted against the evening sky. Overnight at Kimony Resort or similar.
Day 12 – Morondava → Antananarivo
Transfer to Morondava Airport for a domestic flight to Antananarivo. Check in to a central hotel such as Havana Resort or similar. Afternoon at leisure in the capital.
